Danielle Hawkins- Food
Shepard argues that "the urban crisis is a direct consequence of the food-production revolution" (9). I can agree with Shepard and add that food-production revolution has led to most of the crisis we have today. The second we started to mass produce food and pump preservatives into everything is the moment humanities (already) downfall took an even sharper decline. People and animals are suffering the effects of fast and efficient. We have lost our relationship with the hearth and turn to quick, easy, and fast dinners that consist of fast foods or microwavable meals. We then eat super fast and get on to the next thing that demands our attention. These sorts of foods lead to serious health problems that corrupt people's way of lives. It further drives us away from life as it should be. Animals are pumped full of steroids, hormones, and corn to produce the most pay off per animal (i.e. cattle, chickens, pigs, fish, turkey). These animals are packed into small, sometimes dark, areas where they are not able to live a life that they were intended for. Who has ever heard of a salmon eating corn, let alone corn growing in the ocean or in rivers? This way of raising animals for food has become so normal that my roommate said none of us are living our best lives so it is okay that they are not either. At least I as a human have the right to free will and can change my life if I so please. So many poor animals are stuck being used for one thing only. Make. More. Food. I am guilty of feeding into the food-production we have today, however I am educating my self and making the next steps towards buying more ethically sourced and free ranged foods!
