Christina Galbraith - Connecting with the Sacred Prey
Shepard points out that connecting with the 'sacred prey' is a means of taking the shame out of killing animals for food. There is a disconnect nowadays of where food comes from, especially with the advent of fast food. One of the ways in which we can reestablish a connection with the food we eat is through a blessing. I grew up saying grace before beginning a meal, upon reflection I understand that it acts as a type of ritual that connects us to the sacred exchange of energy. I think we can learn from the Native American tradition of thanking prey for their sacrifice. I fear that because most people do not hunt or see their food being prepared, the sacred exchange of energy has lost its meaning to most of the world's population. Our relationship with food is a step away from what it used to be when we were hunters and gatherers. It will be interesting to see how the relationship evolves as food scarcity becomes more of an issues across the globe.
