Grace Goodley- Student Response to Earthing

The practice of earthing is something that has been carried out before it made its way into popular culture in the mid-2010s. Eathing can be practiced anywhere at any time and is seen as an alternative medical practice. The practice aims to neutralize the free radicals in our bodies that can be impactful to healthy cells when an imbalance occurs. Earthing, or grounding, includes at a most basic level place your hands and/or feet directly on the earth. See the earth’s surface contains a massive amount of free electrons that act to neutralize these free radicals and provide health benefits such as inflammation and disorders related to it. I personally see more of the emotional and mental effects from grounding and like to practice it when I feel stressed or overwhelmed. Simply walking around my backyard for a moment or even meditating in the grass provides a sense of connection with the world around me, reminding me of my physical presence at any given moment. This comes back to discussions on the soul-body connection when we discuss the human connection to the natural world. In this practice, one is ridding themselves of the barriers man created in order to feel a full connection with nature, in turn grounding themselves in nature.
