KT Watson- Kosher and Pork
Pork is one of the most recognized 'non-kosher' meat products, pig being seen as unclean (they do not have split hooves and they do not chew their cud) and should not be eaten. This practice can be seen as illogical to outsiders, but from a sociological perspective it makes sense. Pigs require a lot of water to survive, and living in a desert community means pigs are not very economical. Raising pigs for consumption requires more resources then they could provide in a desert society, overall detrimental to a community. The kosher commandments help set guidelines to help a community, even if not fully understood.
