KT Watson- 'Shalom' David Brown

The quote by David Brown regarding the Hebrew word for peace, 'shalom', brought up interesting discussions regarding both the etymology of the word and its relation to ecology.  Shalom is translated to peace in English, used as a greeting; this is an incomplete meaning, used to wish peace/health/wellbeing to another.  It is a contract between both parties, the active striving for peace; it can be spoken between friends, organizations, groups, and nations.  In the context of ecology, it forms a contract between the speaker and the environment, wishing peace on it while at the same time striving to help create said peace.

Danielle Hawkins- Mnt. of Spices

 After reading Hinds Feet, I picked up the sequel to read. The second book is also an allegory in that Much-Afraid who becomes Grace and Glory sees the gloom and disappear that her family is stuck in. She takes refuge with the shepherd and gets his help to show her family the fruit of the spirit which tenders their hearts to the shepherds care and they come into his service.  Before each chapter the shepherd takes Grace and Glory to 8 different mountains where the landscape was different and so beautiful on each one. As a reminder of this book and the impact it made on me, I recently got a tattoo of a lily to help remind me of the important things I learned. This book was interesting in how it had a more personal account with each individual character. It showed how each fruit of the spirit, love, joy, peace, patience, forgiveness, self-control, gentleness, faithfulness, and goodness plays out and how it impacts each individual. Reaction to Chapter 25 of the Ecology of Eden

  A blog on an assigned class reading   The discussion of Biotechnology and Genetic engineering the modular approach of modern society made apparent and keystone role of scientists. In discussing this view of extra-humans and the role of scientists, I was reminded of the TV series  Snowpiercer. Snowpiercer  takes place in the future on a train that holds the ruminates of the globe. This train is necessary to survival because in an effort to halt climate change scientists froze the Earth. Unfortunately, this fictious future is not unimaginable.             The problem is that the extra-human systems are more complicated than we understand. Humans have a history or trying solutions before we know the side effects. The other issue is that that humans tend to be reactive, creating solutions to ecological problems, rather than having an awareness and being proactively intentional in our actions.   ...

Wirzba Reading

  Within the Christian faith, Wirzba iterates the importance of appreciating god’s creations. Because Christians “see” god personified in the natural world, there is an aura of respect for the encompassing ecosphere that He created. This essence of reverence is much like the use of shalom in Judaism. As discussed previously, an interpreted meaning of shalom is a permanent agreement. In this context, there is a permanent agreement between the human and nonhuman realms to establish a sort of “peace” that reconciles the two as they are connected by a higher power of whom created all life.
