Nicolas Pol - Outside Material 3

Water is an important symbol in many religions. According to Hebrew and Christian texts, God would grant 'the blessed with rain water for crops. In Ancient Greece, Minerva was benevolent in the Spring and Summer with water, as she had tears of joy in being united with her daughter Persephone.

According to Charles Black, founder of ta faith-based resource called Multifest, "The symbol of the rain is an analogy for the relationship that people should have with the truth.  Upon discovering the truth, one might feel like they are standing in a cold rain.  Many of you will be forced to rethink your perspective on certain issues."

It is fascinating that religions associate a human concept, such as truth, with a natural phenomena. The approach that religions have towards water reminds me of another symbol discussed in class, which is smoke.

According to the discussion that we had in class, smoke is a physical connection that the religious have towards their gods, as the prayers they put in the fire physically transcend to the heavens through the column of smoke.

Perhaps, the rain is seen as truth because the rain itself is falling from the heavens, meaning that the truth is being brought down to earth by God himself (at least for Judeo-Christian religions).
