Nicolas Pol - Response to Class 2 (Knowledge Formation)
Something that we discussed earlier in the semester that I want to elaborate on is the concept of knowledge.
We began this discussion with Emmanuel Kant, as he wrote his theory of knowledge based on the process of accessing information.
According to Kant, there are three main stages:
1. Perception: raw information is fed to the brain through one of the five senses (touch, taste, vision, etc.)
2. Conception: the raw information is quantified/qualified by the brain
3. Knowledge: The quantified/qualified information is then contextualized by the brain
Interestingly enough, imagination occurs from conception to knowledge, as the information in our brain is no longer grounded in the physical world.
Numerical data, which is used by science, also only exists at the point of perception, as it is not yet contextualized by the brain.
This is a fascinating concept to me, as we are essentially living in universes of our own imagination. If you truly think about it, the world is truly accessible at our fingertips!
