Nicolas Pol - Student Response 3
Something that I have been thinking a lot about lately is our discussion of humanity's relationship with grass.
Grass truly is embedded in our culture, specifically through the family genus of wheat. Our entire species essentially depends off of wheat.
Yet strangely enough, more and more people it seems are having an increased allergic reaction to grass-products (Celiac's disease). It makes you wonder if the grass is aware of what has become of humanity. Perhaps their species is no longer willing to help humans 'win the war,' and are now sabotaging their own allies.
But to take it seriously, as Celiac's disease can lead to fatalities, it is interesting to think about the fact that humans are now becoming allergic to one of the most trusted, and oldest, cultivated crop.
Is this an outcome of poor genetics? Has climate change inspired this sudden allergy?
I have not read enough on the subject to make a conclusion on where this allergy seems to stem from, but in terms of the human saga, it is quite the plot twist to have.
